Wood shakes and shingles are a common steep-slope roof system in some regions of the United States. Shake materials are obtained by logging. The logs are cut down and split to form shakes. Cedar and southern yellow pine are the most commonly used. Some wood types are naturally durable and others require preservative treatment.
